ABOUT PRYDERI SYSTEM
Pryderi System is a group of people living in a single body – many people will commonly understand this as ‘multiple personality’. ‘System’ is a common term that plurals (another term for ‘multiple’) use to describe themselves as a whole. We consider ourselves ‘naturally plural’, and were not created by any sort of childhood abuse, nor do we believe that is the only, or most common reason for plural systems to exist. We do not consider it to be a disorder in our case, as despite the challenges it can cause, managing plural life, we are stronger for it, and function well together. (Aside from an occasional squabble – no group of people can live together without disagreements from time to time.) After many years of hiding our various degrees of developing plurality, we have come to the very difficult decision to be more ‘out’ and try to live a more authentic life for ourselves. A few facts about our system:
- None of us really self-identify as human, but we are all well aware that the body that we live in is, it’s just that our self-identities aren’t reliant on what our body looks like. It does not make any of us less ‘real’ than people who do identify as human, it only poses some challenges in how we handle living in our body.
- Some of us have taken on pseudonyms for public use, and some of us have not. After some debate, we decided that each of us could come to our own decision about what we were comfortable with.
- All of us identify as male and use male (he/him) pronouns. We would generally prefer if when referring to our system collectively, you minimize the use of plural (they/them) pronouns when possible to avoid confusion, as many non-binary singlets (non-plurals) use those pronouns as well, as English does not distinguish between gender-neutral and plural well. You can shorten ‘Pryderi System’ to ‘Pryderi’ or ‘The Pryderis’, if you need to, but generally one can refer to us individually.
- We can pass as singlet (non-plural) in many, if not most situations, but that does not mean we’re ‘faking’ or ‘pretending’ – it’s just a survival mechanism, and we are quite good at it. This could make us seem ‘not plural enough’ to you, but it just means we’re very good at communicating internally, and very much in the habit of hiding.
- While we will use the term ‘headmates’ to describe ourselves/each other, internally we prefer to refer to each other as ‘brothers’, and we do not like the term ‘alters’ at all. We feel it diminishes the importance and reality of the people called ‘alters’, and reinforces the idea that there should be more weight given to ‘the original’, and the idea that there is ‘a real person’ and a bunch of ‘fake people’, when that is not the case for us, nor for many other systems.
- We are all ‘co-conscious’, that is, we are all aware of what’s going on or has gone on in the outside world, and we do not experience blackouts, amnesia, or many of the unfortunately stereotypical ‘disordered’ traits people think of. This also means we have no real secrets from each other – if you tell Rhodri what you got Teo for Christmas, Teo will also know what you said! Yes, even if he wasn’t paying attention right that moment – once one of us knows, it’s very, very easy for all of us to know.
We provide a few resources to learn more about plurality over on our more business oriented site (designed by Rhodri), PryderiStudios.com.
